Jil Cilima
Cinema criticism encounters giving participants the tools for in-depth film analysis.
The EUNIC Algeria Cluster is pleased to present the 3rd edition of Jil Cilima. JIL CILIMA, Encounters on Film Criticism, third edition, began on 18 September and will run until 20 September 2023, in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute of Algiers, the French Institute of Algiers and the Goethe-Institut. Conferences and seminars devoted to film criticism have taken place and will continue throughout the event.
The programme of encounters is as follows. On 18 September 2023, from 10:00 to 18:00, the Goethe-Institut, in collaboration with the French Institute of Algiers, organised a film analysis workshop on Fritz Lang's M. Designed for young film enthusiasts, this analysis workshop takes the form of a collective reflection on a landmark heritage film, Fritz Lang's "M", a pivotal work in the director's filmography. The reflection unfolds in two stages:
- A screening followed by a discussion took place first, starting from the workshop participants' initial impressions and how M is received today. We moved back and forth between the context in which the film was made and how young viewers perceive it in 2023.
- A film analysis session: the interpretive threads explored during the discussion were then refined through close analysis of extracts that had already been mentioned or briefly commented on earlier in the conversation.
From 18:00 to 20:00: The French Institute of Algeria organised the Carte Blanche FID event. Carte Blanche FIDMarseille: every year, at the start of summer, the FIDMarseille international film festival presents a large number of world premieres and first features. For its first Carte Blanche in Algeria, FIDMarseille selected five short films from its 2023 programme.
An independent, inventive cinema for all audiences! In the presence of: Fabienne MORIS – Programming Coordinator at FIDMarseille, Director of FIDLab, Nicolas FEODOROFF – Member of the FIDMarseille selection committee, Head of FIDCampus. The films: CAPITAL / DAW / NAFURA / NOS ÎLES / O FUMO DO FOGO / SMOKE OF THE FIRE
On 20 September 2023: the Italian Cultural Institute of Algiers organises a film criticism workshop with Italian expert Fabrizio Polpettini. Fabrizio Polpettini studied environmental science and visual arts in Milan, trained in documentary filmmaking at the Ateliers Varan in Corsica, and holds a master's degree in audiovisual production from INA. From 2009 to 2018 he was artistic director of Filmcaravan, a travelling film festival in the Imperia region of Italy. In 2014 he co-founded La Bête, a production outfit born from a desire to experiment with new documentary forms. He has directed three short films selected at numerous international festivals. In 2021, Un usage de la mer, his first mid-length documentary, screened in international competition at Dok Leipzig, the Torino Film Festival, Fidocs Santiago de Chile and Ethnocineca Vienna.
